According to Deecke’s subsequent research paper on “tool-use in the brown bear,” the ursus arctos used a barnacle-covered rock to “exfoliate.”
New Scientist points out that a team of researchers from the Norwegian Polar Institute claimed in the early 70’s to have evidence of a polar bear clubbing a seal with a chunk of ice, but the incident went unwitnessed, and has yet to be repeated.
